Meta Is Shutting Down Its Enterprise Communications Business Known As Workplace

Meta Closes Workplace, Ending Ambitions for Enterprise Communication

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has announced that it will be shutting down Workplace, a version of Facebook designed for business communication and productivity. This move marks the end of a ten-year journey for the product, which was initially intended to bring in a new revenue stream for Facebook but ultimately struggled to compete with industry giants Slack and Microsoft Teams.

Background

Workplace, formerly known as Facebook @ Work, was first developed by Meta’s London-based team under the leadership of Lars Rasmussen, co-creator of Google Maps. The product was built on top of Facebook’s own social network platform and aimed to provide a more closed environment for businesses to communicate with their teams.

Initially, Workplace showed promise, attracting significant customers and partnerships with third-party integrations. However, as the market evolved, Workplace struggled to keep pace with industry leaders Slack and Microsoft Teams. Despite efforts to revamp the product, Meta ultimately decided to pull the plug on Workplace.

Timeline

Workplace users will be able to continue using the platform until August 31, 2025, after which it will only be accessible in read-only mode until May 31, 2026. At that point, access will be terminated, and all data stored on the platform will be deleted.

In an effort to facilitate a smooth transition for customers, Meta is offering a 50% discount on Workplace starting September 1, 2024. The company has also designated Workvivo by Zoom as its preferred migration partner, providing additional tools and services to support users in switching to the new platform.
