OkCupid Tests Match Questions Created Using AI from ChatGPT

In the latest move to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and chatbots, OkCupid has begun testing a new category of match questions generated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This development comes amidst the growing trend of companies leveraging AI and chatbots to improve user experience.
What’s New at OkCupid?
OkCupid is now using ChatGPT to generate questions that can help users better understand their compatibility with potential matches. According to Michael Kaye, the company’s head of global communications, "At OkCupid, we always have our finger on the pulse of trending conversations within the technology industry." He continued, "And one topic dominating discussions is ChatGPT. We first began asking our daters how they feel about the platform and other emerging AI tools, and found that daters who believe ChatGPT is a lifesaver get almost 40% more Matches than those who think it’s too Big Brother."
The Idea Behind Using ChatGPT
Kaye explained that this sparked an idea: what if they used ChatGPT to draft their famous matching questions? "That’s when we decided to test this new category of questions, which users have responded really well to," he said.
OkCupid asked ChatGPT to generate six questions that people should ask when dating. These questions include:
- Are you more of an introvert or extrovert?
- Are you a morning or night person?
- What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend?
- What do you value most in a partner?
- How do you know when to take a relationship to the next level?
- How do you balance your own needs with the needs of your partner in a relationship?
Initial Results
The questions generated by ChatGPT have been answered more than 135,000 times. The results show that:
- Most respondents consider themselves introverts.
- A majority prefer nighttime over morning time.
- People generally want to hang out with friends on the weekend.
- Trust is what they value most in a partner.
The Growing Trend of AI and Chatbots in Dating Apps
It’s not surprising that OkCupid is leveraging the technology, given some dating app users have already used ChatGPT to draft messages to their matches. Since its launch a few months ago, ChatGPT has dominated the internet and become increasingly popular.
Microsoft’s Integration of GPT-4 Model into Bing
Earlier this week, Microsoft announced its long-rumored integration of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model into Bing, providing a ChatGPT-like experience within the search engine. The hype around ChatGPT has also seen Google working to reassure investors and analysts that it’s still a leader in developing AI.
The Future of Dating Apps
As companies continue to harness the power of AI and chatbots, it will be interesting to see how OkCupid’s experiment evolves and whether other dating apps follow suit. One thing is certain: the future of matchmaking has never looked brighter.
